Why Rising Congenital Syphilis Rates is about Health Equity
California is experiencing a dramatic increase in the rates of congenital syphilis, babies born with syphilis, seeing the highest number of cases since 1992. In 2021, California was ranked 11th for the highest congenital syphilis rates of all states.
From a larger scope, it may be difficult to understand why rates of a treatable and preventable disease would be increasing. However, it’s important to look at this situation as one of health equity or access to care.
According to the CDC, “health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health.”
For pregnant people who have access to regular prenatal visits, they will receive syphilis tests at least twice during their pregnancy. For those who may not have health insurance, live far from a health facility, have a language barrier, be un-housed, or many other obstacles to access we can start to see how the barriers begin to compound and our communities experience an increase in diseases such as congenital syphilis.
Some ways AAP-CA3 is promoting health equity regarding the increase in congenital syphilis is by offering informational materials in the major languages spoken in San Diego County: Arabic, Dari, English, Farsi, Korean, Mandarin, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. We are also working closely with community organizations to spread the word about congenital syphilis and how to access free STI testing and pregnancy support. Additionally, we are working closely with healthcare providers to increase awareness and educate them on updated policies including testing pregnant patients for syphilis at least twice.

Por qué las crecientes tasas de sífilis congénita se relacionan con la equidad en la salud
California está viendo un aumento drástico en las tasas de sífilis congénita, bebés nacidos con sífilis, con el mayor número de casos desde 1992. En 2021, California ocupó el 11.0 lugar en las tasas más altas de sífilis congénita de todos los estados.
Puede ser difícil entender por qué las tasas de una enfermedad curable y prevenible podrían estar aumentando. Sin embargo, es importante ver esta situación como un asunto de equidad en la salud o acceso a la atención médica.
Según los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades, “la equidad en la salud ocurre cuando todos tienen igualdad de oportunidades de estar lo más sanos posible.”
Las personas embarazadas que tienen acceso a visitas prenatales regulares se harán pruebas de sífilis por lo menos dos veces durante su embarazo. Para aquellas que tal vez no tengan seguro médico, vivan lejos de una institución de salud, tengan barrera del idioma, no tengan vivienda, o tengan otros obstáculos para el acceso a la atención médica, empezamos a ver cómo las barreras empiezan a multiplicarse y nuestras comunidades tienen un aumento en enfermedades como la sífilis congénita.
Algunas maneras en las que AAP-CA3 está promoviendo la equidad en la salud respecto al aumento de sífilis congénita son ofrecer material informativo en los idiomas principales que se hablan en el Condado de San Diego: árabe, darí, inglés, farsi, coreano, mandarín, somalí, español, tagalo y vietnamita. También estamos trabajando de cerca con organizaciones comunitarias para correr la voz sobre sífilis congénita y cómo tener acceso a pruebas gratis de infecciones de transmisión sexual y apoyo durante el embarazo. Además, estamos trabajando con proveedores de servicios de salud para aumentar la concientización y educarlos en las políticas actualizadas, incluyendo hacer pruebas de sífilis a pacientes embarazadas por lo menos dos veces.
